As a vice president of a company, the role you have contains great responsibility. Therefore, you’ll find your goal-setting and planning may not look the same or similar to those you oversee. But there is a bit of advice I have to help you with planning and goal setting as a VP.

Planning as a vice president

In the most general description, a vice president oversees operations for certain sectors of the company or all of them, standing in for the president wherever they are unavailable. Understanding your most general function, it is wise to align your goals with the president you work directly with.

Top leaders are planning and preparing for long-term goals and objectives as well as handling the most important short-term tasks at hand. The top-level handles responsibilities only they can carry out due to their high positions. Planning must coincide with this and it could be a good idea to collaborate with your president as much as possible.

Goal setting as a vice president

Analyzing the authority you have within the company is important for planning and goal setting. For goal-setting purposes, it establishes what goals are meant for you and what can be accomplished by those you oversee.

Setting goals as a VP requires analyzing where you can best lead your team to do so. It could be implementing changes based on feedback, advocating for employees or departments, giving approval on operations changes, and many other contributions.

Let your goals always focus on the success of your staff. A successful staff can achieve the performance goals you will ultimately seek. Remember no goals will be obtainable if the staff do not have the tools and resources to succeed. To give a better perspective on setting goals as a VP, consider what goal-setting methods to utilize.

What to consider when goal setting

After jotting down some goal ideas surrounding your contributions to your company and staff, it’s time to break them down. Goals need to be broken down into steps or milestones. They must be measurable and reasonable otherwise there could be some uncertainty during the process of achieving the overall goal. You’ve heard of SMART goals, right?

Key performance indicators, or KPIs, need to be reviewed regularly. Doing so not only helps plan your personal goals but also helps set reasonable benchmarks for your staff.

Make it a habit of meeting regularly with management or at least senior management to discuss what goals are hardest for the company to reach and why. This will be where you come in and determine what goals need to be in place to overcome them.

Let’s make sure goals and plans are in place

Prioritization and analysis are a big part of planning and setting goals in a high position such as vice president. But as an executive business coach, it is my specialty to help you organize your plan and goals. Contact me by email or phone and we can get discuss getting your goals in order.
