Fire accidents in the kitchen?

Here are some safety tips from the professionals.

Removing every potential source of a kitchen fire is impossible, but you can minimize risk and prevent a fire. Here are a few tips to keep yourself and your kitchen safe:

Appliances Should Be Cared For

Make sure the appliances are cleaned, repaired, and serviced regularly. Clean out the crumbs in your toaster regularly; clean the crumb tray. Wipe the microwave on the inside. Clean out the oven. If you see any appliance acting funny or sparking, unplug and have them repaired or replaced without delay.

When Appliances Aren’t In Use

If you are not using electrical appliances like toasters, toaster ovens, coffee makers, blenders, unplug them. They use electricity even when they aren’t turned on, and if the wires are old and faulty or if they overheat, a fire could break out in your absence.

Install a Smoke Detector

Install a smoke detector near the kitchen but not in it. It should detect a fire and trigger the alarm, but the slightest trace of smoke or steam from cooking should not activate it.

Turning On the Stove

When turning on a gas stove or a gas oven, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and be careful not to leave the gas turned on for too long before lighting it.

Metal in the Microwave

Metals in the microwave are a big no! The sparks can lead to severe damage to the microwave and could also result in a fire.

Be Careful With Hot Oil

Filled pots of hot oil or grease could splatter and lead to a fire.

Grease Is Flammable

A dirty stove with a grease buildup can cause a fire as grease is flammable. A clean stove is a safe stove.

Handling Hot Items

When handling hot pans or pots from the stove or oven, be careful and use potholders and mitts to protect yourself.

Long Sleeves and Hair

I know we all love wearing flowy sleeves but don’t wear them in the kitchen. If you do, roll them up! Tie your long hair or pin it up. You don’t want either of them trailing in sauce or catching fire.

Don’t Leave the Stove Unattended

While cooking food, stay in the kitchen. Do this especially if you are cooking with grease, or if on high heat, don’t leave it unattended. If you have to go for an urgent call or even step out of the house for 5 minutes, turn it off. Don’t risk it.

Clear the Stove

Dish towels, paper towels, and pot holders can easily catch fire. Sometimes we leave the burner on by accident, and the heat buildup could lead to items near the stove or oven catching fire. Better to be safe than sorry.
