We started working with PDI Federated almost 5 years ago. They were looking for a wrap design for their vehicles that could be used across a number of different vehicles. Fords, Chevy's and Mazda's. So how do you design a fleet wrap that can be used on a whole bunch of different body lines and vehicle types? You give Optimum Signs a call.
We started with a list of the various types and body styles of the vehicles that they where currently using. We laid out a number of elements that could be used across these vehicles along with a number of elements that could be exchanged. We sampled multiple color schemes and font types along with angles and stripes. As we worked through the design, we realized that a number of the design choices really weren't applicable. The same thing with the color choices. After a number of proofs, we finally got to the point that we had a working version of the design. Next we worked out which elements could be exchanged on each vehicle because PDI gets support from their vendors for the vehicles and in turn the vendor gets to highlight their products on the vehicle.
PDI Federated supplied us with graphics from their vendor to incorporate into this design. Because the images are dark, we decided to add a halo around the image so that you can see what the image is. This helped with the contrast against the black background and lightened up the dark area of this design.
This is what we call a hybrid wrap as we have part that is panel printed and part that uses cut graphics. The panel print covers the elements on the sides of the vehicle while the doors and hood use cut graphics. When we print the panels, we place a marker on the print that we can use to align the cut graphics and once the graphics have been applied, we can remove the marker. This is just another little trick to making sure that everything lines up and the design is consistent across many different vehicles. When we wrap the sides, we purposely bring the wrap around the back of the vehicle to the center of the back hatch. We split the wrap down the center using the license plate holder to hide the seam. For the hood we use a black background with the supplier's logo. Very high contrast so it is very visible, even on a white vehicle.
