When you design a wrap for a vehicle, there are a great number of items that have to be taken into consideration. Between the location of the graphics and contact information, is one of the most important features: the color of the background relative to the color of the car. That was the challenge with this car as the print was blue and so was the car.
There are multiple schools of thought when you wrap a car with a similar color. Our customer chose the harder of the two options: match the color of the vehicle. Because we have done a large number of wraps on vehicles, we know how to handle this. Some companies will march out to the vehicle with color chips. Others will use paint codes from the car manufacturer. Optimum Signs has always used technology to give our customers the very best product possible and this is no exception. We use a photospectrometer to determine the exact color of anything we are matching color. No, this isn’t something that the Ghostbusters used. It’s a tool that measures exact color reflection AND refraction to determine the exact color. It also translates the color into a numeric equivalent that our printer can read. The software that we use to manage the printer then determines the correct combination of colors to match the color. It’s pretty cool stuff and really takes all the guess work out of matching colors.
The custom design took my designer a little over an hour to complete and the owner loved it from the first view. The design focuses on the trademark dome that dominates the property on Loomis Road. We also chose a sky blue for the accent color and as you can see it really stands out and is very easy to read. We also used perforated vinyl on the windows so the drivers can still see out but the design stays consistent. We wrapped from the “rain gutter” down to the chip guard, from hood to tailgate. The color never changed and looked incredible.
Installation of a wrap like this one starts at the drivers door. We printed this wrap horizontally so we could line up the wrap with the four corners of the vehicle. We printed this wrap on Avery 1105RS with Release and laminated it with an optically clear laminate. The laminate is the trick to the colors not fading and protecting the print. It keeps the weather and the sun from direct exposure to the print.
