Custom Acrylic ADA Sign  What makes an ADA sign ADA compliant? There are multiple characteristics that have to be in place for a sign to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.  Here are a few of those items.

Material – The actual material is not specified under the ADA but the finish of that material is mandated by the ADA.  We can use wood, metal, acrylic and just about any other substrate.  Where the ADA kicks in is the finish. The finish must be a matte or flat finish, absolutely no gloss finishes.  This allows for a higher contrast between the materials which helps those that are visually impaired to discern what the sign is identifying.

Print – The actual printing on the sign must be 1/8″ raised print.  This can be adhered via a UV printer, second surface (reverse engraving) or almost any other means.  The symbols are also directed by the ADA and must comply with the list of approved symbols. Even the size of the symbols is mandated and where the symbol is located on the sign is also directed.  We do have the ability to work with custom colors for both the background and the raised lettering.  We can even paint the background with custom colors or add decorative designs outside of the area that the symbols occupy.  We can even match colors to logos or corporate designs. Just as long as we stay outside of the defined area.

Size – Size is determined by where the sign goes.  Signs inside stairwells must by 12″ x 18″ (international standard) while room signs can be 4″ x 6″ (depending on what information is needed).  Bathroom signs are recommended at 6″ x 8″ or larger.

Braille – This is one part of the ADA that there is no latitude with. Braille must be present and in a very specific location relative to the type. Period. The braille must use a rounded raster (braille beads).  The braille beads can be colored but it is recommended that the braille by clear or white.  The overall braille beads must be at least 1/8″ tall with the spacing between characters matching that of the type.

ADA signs have errors in them that can be expensive. Not to mention that you very well may have to replace the signs, it could cost your your occupancy permit. With the latest revisions, Fire Marshalls, Building Inspectors, Electrical Inspectors, and a few more are responsible for ADA compliance and can hold permits if the signs aren’t done correctly.  Optimum Signs knows the correct format for the ADA signs whether it’s the domestic version or International standard. We can help you not make an expensive mistake. Give us a call at 262.289.9481 or email us at info@optimumsignswi.com.
