When our phone rand and the caller ID showed up as "PUBG", we all thought is was another telemarketer trying to sell an extended car warranty. But it was legitimate, again. You see, we did the original lobby sign for PUBG in Madison when they built their new offices about four years ago. Now, the corporate office put out a change to the branding that required us to change out the sign. Only this time we were working with an inset in the lobby wall with almost zero margin for error.
This sign is what we refer to as a backlit or push through acrylic sign. We start off with a custom made aluminum cabinet. The cabinet was made to within 1/8" of tolerances of the prior sign. The cabinet was made from tube aluminum for the frame and skinned with 1/32" aluminum. We primed and painted the entire sign with a gloss black chosen by the customer. The face was removed and placed on a CNC machine which removed the logo and letters from the face of the sign. We then replaced the face of the sign on the CNC machine with a piece of 3/4" thick translucent acrylic. We inverted the file we used to cut out the face and removed the acrylic that was outside of the outlines. This gave us about 1/4" that pushed through the face and stood out of the face of the sign. But how did we get such a rich yellow? We use LED's that are made for underwater usages. This ensures that the LED's will light for the next 100,000 hours. But how did we get the yellow? We used a translucent yellow vinyl and installed it to the back of the clear acrylic. This prevented any light leakage (white light) and creates the warm glow. The trick is locating the LED's at the correct distance from the face as LED's have a distance that they work best at. The submersible LED's light best at 3" from the substrate. With the way we constructed this sign, that's exactly the distance from the face to the LED's.
On the day of installation we started by removing the existing cabinet. We noticed immediately there was a slight difference when measuring from the top right corner down to the bottom left. The inset in the wall was not square! Oh, boy. The sign was made to fit in the inset perfectly but because the opening wasn't square we had to get creative. It is truly amazing what a wood chisel and a hammer can do!
