This customer came to us with a problem: they have a great location but no one knows that they are there. The location brags about having almost 60,000 cars pass their location every week. But again, if no one knows that they are there, it could just as well be a million cars. So how do we change that?
We started by calculating the viewable distance that the sign needed to be. We determined that the farthest point that the sign needed to be readable was just over 125'. At 100' letters that are 4" tall are readable. So we knew that anything that was important to the customer had to be at least 4" tall. We didn't need the sign to be internally lit because we have a very bright spotlight on the ground shining up on the building. This made the decision to use custom cut acrylic pretty easy. Acrylic is a great material to make signs out of because it is mostly weather neutral. The color will never fade because the color is consistent throughout the material. It is impervious to rain and snow and looks great for years. As we were moving through the process of getting permits approved, our customer came back to us and asked if we could come up with a way to list a number of their vendors on the sign. Sure. But they could change and needed to be easily removable. Of course. We decided that these logos did not necessarily be visible from the street as customers aren't looking for the logos to find the store. To add 10 vendor logos via custom cut acrylic would add about 50% to the cost of the sign. How about printing the logos and placing them on a piece of polycarbonate? Polycarb is almost indestructible and will never yellow. Sounds like a solution to me.
We printed the logos on an exterior grade vinyl and laminated the print with an optically clear overlaminate. This will prevent the colors from fading or looking worn for a great many years to come. We used an exterior grade standoff so the polycarb panel isn't mounted against the wall but rather 1/2" off the wall. This allows the rain and snow to pass gently behind the panel. It also allows us to change out any vendors if the need occurs.
