This was a project that will go into the books as one of the most intricate sets of channel letters Optimum Signs has done. We battled the CIty, the building owner, the contractors that built the building, and ultimately the weather.
When we started this project, we were asked if we could mount a set of channel letters to the front of a building that was going to be mostly glass. So we met with the General Contractor to discuss what we needed to ensure that the sign was safe and did what the franchise owner wanted. As we were going through the prints, we discovered that outside of a central I-beam that ran the length of the building, the only choice we had was to mount the raceway to the window frames. This is what is sometimes referred to as a really bad idea. So my construction team went to work on a solution. They determined that the I-beam would provide a stable and rugged foundation to mount the signs to. So the building goes up and we finish the construction of the channel letters. But we weren't done yet. Because we were mounting the channel letters to an I-beam, we had to fabricate a hanging system that would secure the signs and not allow them to move. My construction crew fabricated four stainless steel dowels and welded 600# test strength beam clamps to one end. The other end they welded into the raceway. This gave us over 2400# of weight bearing for a sign that weights less than 50#! To add stability to the signs, we designed a system of metal frames that allowed us to connect to the window frames. The intricacies of the construction of the building added a dimension to the install as the window frames were installed crooked. We needed a 1.5" lip on the bottom of the I-beam but the window frames near the corner of the building were installed flush to the bottom of the I-beam. Once again, our construction crew figured out how to modify the installation to make sure these signs last for many years to come.
