Our customer, Wisconsin Lutheran College in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin needed a new sign for the entrance of the completely remodeled Time of Grace athletic center. The center had just undergone massive remodeling including a new, state-of-the-art floor, seating, wall coverings and a new audio system. The center looks brand new from top to bottom, except for the signage.
Optimum Signs worked with WLC's design group to come up with a sign design that covered over 18 feet wide and just under 4 feet tall. We also had to have the ability to change the names of the sponsors. What we came up with was a 18' x 40" custom made aluminum frame. The frame had to be made in three separate sections to accommodate the transportation and installation while also working around the faces which had to be applied after the frame was installed on the wall. The frame was welded together using standard 1" x 1" x 1/8" aluminum tubing. the corners were reinforced with cut aluminum and welded to the back to add strength across the frame. We also pre-scored the frame so that when we were 15 feet in the air it was easier to drill and mount the faces. The faces we used were 1/4" aluminum composite. This made the faces bother very light and very strong. We printed the silver design lines that run through out the sign directly to the aluminum then overlaid the rest of the design. The hard part was making sure that the seems didn't show. By using a little sign magic, we were able to offset where the seams fell so that they weren't apparent in the design. The faces were mounted to the frame after the frame was mounted to the wall using 200# weight tested tapcons. By using 6 tapsons per frame, 18 total, we made sure that the sign was completely and totally safe. This sign isn't moving anytime soon. The faces were mounted using 24 point self taping metal screws placed every two feet. For the vendor panel, we used industry standard .018 steel. This allowed us to print the vendor names on a magnetic material so they can be changed.
We utilized 3M's IJ35C for the print material and laminated with 3M's 8508. This will ensure that the color never fades, cracks or peels. The vendor strip located below the sign was also printed on 3M material then applied to the steel.
