Ah, the joys of middle school. I am sure you remember when you were in middle school and the school play rolled around. Between tryouts, costume design and manufacture, rehearsals and set building, there was more than enough for everyone to do. Parents and students really had to dig in to help pull off the school play. We at Optimum Signs, always believe in giving back to our community and when we were asked by Good Shepherd’s Evangelical Lutheran School in West Allis if we could help with the back drop for the play, we immediately wanted to help.
The play was titled “The Last Pitch” and was set in the early 1920’s. We needed a stadium and a living room. The living room wasn’t much of an issue even if the living room was 12′ wide and 8′ tall. Our graphic artists went to work. As we expected, the living room was the easy design of the two as the stadium design had to be drawn from scratch. Multiple layers of color and design all had to be manipulated so that patterns didn’t look like they repeated. Everything from the faces of the crowd and the colors of their shirts to the structure in the roof line, all had to be drawn in and shaded. We added texture to the drawing so it looked less like a drawing and more like a picture. Overall,about 16 hours of design time went into both backdrops but as you can see, they looked incredible.
The school provided plywood sheets built on wooden frames for us to install the vinyl on. The 4′ x 8′ sheets were a little rough, but the texture from the wood barely showed through. Once the frames were completed and stood up, the backdrops really came to life.
