One of several things that Optimum Signs pride ourselves on, are our partnerships. One of our partners came to us with a bit of a rush job for one of their customers. Roger’s Memorial Hospital’s campus in Oconomowoc had recently undergone a large scale remodel, and part of that remodel was the renaming of one of their buildings. The Charles E. Kubly FOCUS Center was going to be dedicated at a ceremony two weeks from the beginning of this project. So how do you say thank you to the people that just made a donation to pay for the renovations? With a 8′ tall lobby sign, that’s how.
Design details had to be finished and a team of professional installers had to be lined up the handle the 8′ tall pieces of 1/2″ thick acrylic. No small task. We went with two pieces of 1/2″ acrylic with polished edges. Both the double pieces of acrylic and the polished edges would enhance the white LED’s that were located along the bottom of the sign. By applying the vinyl to the back side of the acrylic, we protected the images. We also used a third piece of acrylic as a stand off to hold the name of the building. A bright orange vinyl with white letters cut in reverse so we could install the letters under the acrylic added a nice touch. All very nice, only one hurdle, it all had to be assembled ON THE WALL. The first two pieces went up fairly easily. When installing standoffs through multiple pieces of acrylic, you learn pretty quickly that there are two factors that will heavily influence how the install is going to go. First, are the taps perfectly straight? Second, are the taps long enough to thread through all the acrylic? The installers and the designers had both done their homework as both factors were not an issue. The third piece of acrylic was a bit of a challenge as we had to remove the standoffs that would fit through all three pieces of acrylic, then place the piece and refasten the standoffs.
To finish the piece, we attached a LED light bar at the bottom of the acrylic pieces that would shine upwards and cast a glow at the edges of the sign. A beautiful design and a great lobby piece.
