We were recently contacted by the Blue Devils baseball about a few banners for their upcoming season. The Blue Devils, or as they are also known as PST, provides intensive levels of coaching to help serious baseball players break down their baseball moves and train them on the exact movements of the position. They understand the exact correct position for a pitchers elbow and wrist but not so much about how to make an exterior banner that will last a full season. That is where they asked us to step in.
When we started working on the design, we had almost 20 different images to draw from. We talked with PST about where the banners would be and how would they be displayed. It turns out that the banners will travel with the team as they travel around the Midwest playing ball. The banners will be displayed on the center field wall and another on the bleachers. The closest anyone will be to the banner is around 25′ with the majority of people viewing the banners from about 50′. This means that the smallest character can be no less than 2.5″ so that eliminated a few of the images as they held characters that were less than 2.5″. The other images needed to be cleaned up and further defined so that they didn’t become unreadable at the distance that they would be displayed. We also needed to add contrast around most of the images so that they didn’t disappear into the black background. Then we took an unprecedented step of laminating the banner. This seals in the color and will ensure that the banner looks good in September. We also used normal brass grommets spaced every 2′ to make sure that the banner would display correctly. Overall, about 2 hours of design time and production to create a banner that will get our customer noticed.
