When we were contacted by a local auto dealership that was undergoing an overhaul of their carwash, they had a problem. Despite all the time and effort into minimizing the amount of time that the car wash was closed, someone forgot about the control sign that mounts inside the car wash. The one they had was four years old and had spent every minute inside the car wash.
We found the current control panel was heavily crusted with dried soap and hard water to a point of etching the lexan lens. It was so bad, you couldn’t see the top three control boxes and the bottom three were difficult to read even with perfect light. Oh yes, did I mention that the car wash has to be open in 5 business days? This was an interesting challenge. We contacted the manufacturer of the car wash to see if they sell replacement lens for this type of car wash. They didn’t, only new light control boxes for $2200. That seemed a bit outlandish especially considering that the existing box was in perfect working order. So it was time for Optimum Signs to put our collective heads together. We noticed that the etching of the lens seemed very consistent across the lens. We also noticed that when the lens got wet, the stains seemed to lessen. We also noticed that if you sprayed a name brand bathroom cleaner made to remove tough soap and water stains that the stains lessened even further. Time to get to work! After two hours of spraying and allowing the cleaner to penetrate the dried soap, wiping it down with a burnishing cloth, and repeating, did the soap scum begin to lift. After all the rubbing and scrubbing we were able to restore this sign to like new condition. Like new condition without the $2200 price tag. We saved our customer over $2000 by using some elbow grease and common sense.
