A spectacular lobby sign is easy to achieve regardless of your budget. The key to building a great looking sign and sticking to a set budget is in the selection of the right combination of materials. For example, if you want an etched glass look, but your budget doesn’t include an etched glass option, you can achieve a similar effect with plexiglass and etched vinyl. This lobby sign for the Housing Rights Center in Los Angeles is constructed using a 3/8″ thick piece of acrylic, cut to a size of 24″ tall x 48″ wide. The acrylic is then covered with a layer of etched vinyl film on the backside to provide dimension. The digitally printed logo and lettering are added to the top  first surface of the acrylic sign. This creates a nice effect. The combination of adding the etched or frosted vinyl on the back of the acrylic panel and then putting the printed logo on the first surface gives the appearance that the letters and logo are floating on the lobby sign.
The completed sign is then mounted to the client’s indoor wall using stand-off hardware in brushed aluminum. Stand-off hardware is relatively inexpensive if you chose standard, stock items and sizes such as these 1″ brushed aluminum pieces. Of course, stand-offs can be custom ordered or even custom manufactured in many colors, shapes and sizes.
