I was contacted by the Facilities dept. of the Eastfield Community College campus to control the heat problem in the lobby of there new library, newly constructed, caused by direct sun. They had originally requested a quote for blinds to control the sun's heat since the glass was already factory tinted. After I evaluated the situation, I proposed heat reflecting solar film instead of blinds to control the temperature in the lobby and make it cooler. I educated the facility team on the fact that blinds do not reflect heat they only redirect heat up and does not lower the A/C load in a building.  Solar film will reject the solar energy off of the glass before it enters the building hence lowering the A/C load which allows more cooling air to remain in the building. The head engineer explained that the glass was tinted by the factory.  That was true, but it was factory tinted with a dark, non-relective coating, which does not have high heat reflecting qualities, it has high heat absorbing qualities.  The absorbed heat is radiating into the lobby. Solar film reflects the heat off of the glass, limiting the absorbing of the heat by the factory coating, making the window units more energy efficient.  Since film is applied to interior of glass it did not change exterior appearance. Also, solar film was 1/2 of the cost of what it would cost to put in roller-shades or blinds. Result:  Lowered the lobby temperature an average of 6-8 degrees throughout the day.  Tested after the A/C was given 48 hours to run with the solar film applied.  Since film is applied to interior of glass it did not change exterior appearance This application is done all over Dallas/Ft.Worth to existing factory coatings that are not created to reflect heat but to primarily lower glare.
