A school district in the Fort Collins area has garnered huge energy savings in the last year. With 169,000 cubic feet of natural gas and over 758,000 kilowatt hours of electricity saved, this looks like just the tip of the iceberg of what is possible with energy efficiency within the district. For educational institutions, it does take much to have an assessment completed to evaluate and provide a sensible set of recommendations.
When looking at it from a yearly budget perspective, this was a great way to save money instead of having to cut programs or lay off employees. Last year alone the Poudre School District saved approximately $87,500 worth of energy.
Many Colorado state utilities offer energy savings programs. Some of these programs were used by the Poudre School District to achieve their goal of $87,500+ of energy savings. Partnerships between towns, cities and their utilities, are necessary for the country’s education institutions to replicate this feat. In the town of Montezuma, CO, for example, the local utility company and the town partnered up to upgrade seven buildings. This has saved the city more than $50,000 per year and also earned a rebate of over $30,000.
To continue this process will only ease the burden on the school systems in Colorado, Houston, and nationwide, and will continue to make the United States a more sustainable country.
