TPO roofs are made of long sections of membrane heated together to form a watertight covering on a commercial facility. Many buildings use TPO systems, from apartments to warehouses and everything in between. Any structure with a flat or low-sloping roof can benefit from installing a TPO roof.

TPO roofs are made up of a base insulation layer falling into one of three categories: polyisocyanurate, expanded polystyrene, and extruded polystyrene. These three come at different price points and have effectiveness on energy efficiency. Spend more up front and you will save in the long run on energy costs.
Once the proper insulation is chosen for the client’s budget and building needs, it is installed and then a layer of sanded plywood or OSB is installed for the TPO layer to be added on top of.
The TPO membrane comes in long sheets and is installed and then fastened to the wood layer with nails or screws, or held together with adhesive. The adhesive method is more time consuming but preferred because there is less chance of an issue with the membrane.
From there, the membrane’s seams are heated and bond together and the watertight seal is complete. Additional flashing and gutters are added to aid in drainage and the TPO system is complete.
