Bitumen is a term that is used for both coal tar pitch and asphalt products. Originally, modified bitumen, which comes from Europe in the 70s, were added to replace certain chemicals that were in the distillation process. Asphalt is still the main product in modified bitumen however the installation of it and how it’s fabricated is what makes it so popular.
TPO Roofs
An alternative style of roofing is called a TPO roof. TPO stands for thermoplastic polyolefin single-ply roofing. That’s a mouthful so we just say TPO. This style of roofing is much easier to install and it is installed mechanically. We have seen the strength of TPO roofs to far outweigh modified bitumen by strength to three or four times. This is also pretty popular for people who are choosing to go green as there are no plastics added and TPO does not degrade under the UV rays caused by the sun. It usually comes in white, black, and greys. Using white roof materials reduces the heat effect and thus helping to keep the building cooler.
