Subscription Model For My Product or Service?

There is no turning back now that subscriptions rule our lives. Customers pay monthly fees to access a variety of goods and services, including those for movies, music, and even razors for shaving your face! This is all for good reason: subscription-based businesses benefit from high levels of client loyalty, predictable recurring revenue, and low churn rates, to name a few. Below is an explanation of the fundamentals of the software subscription business model, how it functions, and the main advantages and disadvantages you should be aware of before entering into one or creating a campaign around your products or services.

Basic Business Model Concepts for Software Subscriptions

It is always helpful to first define some scope of the situation. At its foundation, the subscription business model is for more than just software companies. Tangible items like bath bombs and many others are feasible candidates for a subscription service, just as much as registering an app membership. Essentially, as long as your consumer can receive a product or service from your company on a routine basis, joined in tandem with a payment structure, you can set up a subscription model for your business!

What Are the Subscription Model's Main Benefits?

Why is the subscription model so alluring, then? Since every business is slightly different, there is no simple solution to this problem, but some important benefits are immediately apparent.

Adapting to Customer Expectations and the Entry Barrier

First, because customers' expectations are always changing, there is not only more competition today, but more dynamic competition. This means that companies don't want to be the only ones in their market lagging behind while others are more forward-thinking. It's understandable why your customers might not want to commit if your competitors offer a no-obligation subscription for $99/month while you only offer a one-time payment for ten times as much. The risk of the initial cost is a real concern for modern consumers, even though your product may be superior or even more affordable in the long run.  Although the perpetual model isn't dead, because of its rigidity, high startup costs, and customer risk, it is being replaced by the subscription model in many applications. Because of shifting consumer expectations and consumption patterns, perpetual business models are becoming less relevant.

Flexibility for both the product's provider and the customer.

Being one of its strongest benefits, the subscription model gives the customer utmost flexibility because there are no expensive up-front costs and the ability to try it out for a few months and cancel if unsatisfied. Simply put, it's much simpler for the customer to decide whether or not to buy.

Offer only the best iteration of your product.

This is a good example of when you regularly update your product with new features or upgrades. Since you want to provide the best product possible, it makes sense to have your customers use your product's most recent version.  Additionally, products or services can even be structured in a way that only higher-paying subscriptions provide more premium versions of these offerings.

Give clients the option to select their preferred subscription tier.

Another way to give your customers more options while retaining profit is to offer different subscription tiers. They can choose the lowest tier of subscriptions if they only want the most essential benefits. However, you can provide a more expensive subscription tier where your most valuable customers will, for example, receive more support from your experts if they are more demanding (for example, enterprise customers). By doing this, you can ensure that your resource allocation is efficient.

Gain Customer Understanding to Foster Better Relationships.

Of course, having a successful relationship with your customers directly depends on your ability to get to know them and their pain points. One way to have more contact with your consumers is to offer a subscription. For instance, you could stipulate that they sign up for your newsletter. This allows you to upsell higher service tiers, inform customers about new features, assist them with tutorials, share customer success stories, or do anything else you believe will keep customers satisfied and feel like they are getting a good deal from their subscription. On the other hand, being nearer to your customers enables you to understand their perspectives. What do they think should be improved based on their current experience, and what do they like about the service? You must get to know your customers to develop a happy relationship with them.
