So Just Who Discovered Cannabis In The First Place

BY: Josh Lampright, High Forest ReLeaf
High-Forest-ReLeaf-CBD-Hohenwald-Tennessee-who-discovered-cannabisCannabis, also known as marijuana among other names, has a history that spans thousands of years! It is woven into the fabric of many ancient cultures. But pinning down exactly who discovered cannabis can be tricky since it has likely been used by humans since prehistoric times. Continue reading to explore the early history of cannabis, its uses across different civilizations, and how it spread around the world.

The Ancient Origins of Cannabis

Cannabis is believed to have originated in Central Asia, specifically in regions that are now Mongolia and southern Siberia. Archaeological evidence suggests that cannabis was one of the first agricultural crops cultivated by humans, dating back more than 12,000 years. This predates humans cultivating grains! It was likely valued for how durable it was as a fiber source when making textiles, how nutritious its seeds were, and its psychoactive properties for ritualistic and medicinal purposes.

Cannabis in Ancient Civilizations

The history of cannabis use is rich in ancient times. It was widely used for its medicinal and psychoactive properties, especially in China. In fact, the Chinese were among the first to recognize the value of cannabis in medicine. A Chinese emperor named Shen Nung, often referred to as the Father of Chinese Medicine, is said to have discovered the healing properties of cannabis in 2737 BCE. He prescribed cannabis for potentially helping treat a variety of ailments, including gout, rheumatism, malaria, and reportedly, even poor memory! In ancient India, cannabis was considered a sacred plant and was used in religious rituals and for medicinal purposes. The Atharvaveda, a sacred text of Hinduism written around 2000 to 1400 BCE, describes cannabis as one of the "five sacred plants". The ancient Indians used it in a drink called bhang, a tradition that continues to this day during the festival of Holi.

Cannabis Spreads Across Continents

Cannabis spread to the Middle East between 2000 BCE and 1400 BCE, likely through nomadic Indo-European tribes. It made its way into the Islamic empire by the 8th century CE, where it was used by Sufi mystics to induce trance states. From the Middle East, cannabis traveled to Africa, where it was used for its psychoactive effects and as medicine. By the 19th century, cannabis had made its presence felt in Western medicine, thanks to Irish physician William Brooke O’Shaughnessy, who introduced cannabis to Western medicine after observing its use in India. This led to the widespread use of cannabis tinctures in Europe and North America.

Modern Discovery and Prohibition

While ancient civilizations recognized and utilized the various benefits of cannabis, its modern history has been marked by prohibition. The early 20th century saw a rising tide of regulations and restrictions against cannabis around the world, influenced by political, racial, and economic factors. In the United States, the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 effectively made possession or transfer of cannabis illegal throughout the United States under federal law, excluding medical and industrial uses. This was just the beginning of strict regulations that would sweep across numerous other countries.
