However, if your suspension is in a sorry state, then your smooth ride might feel more like a bumpy roller coaster – not good! Thankfully, a failing suspension is far from unnoticeable, and there are plenty of signs to let you know when you might need to go to a repair shop.
What are the signs of a failing suspension?
Your suspension system exists to fine-tune the driving experience – to make sure that your car drives as straight as possible, that the body is level as you move, and to make sure that any bumps your car drives over are absorbed. Here are some of the common problems you may notice when your suspension starts to wear out.
- Feeling bumps on the road:
If you’re really feeling every bump that you come across on the road, that is often a telltale sign that your suspension is failing.
Your ride should be smooth, not bumpy. It’s okay to feel a bump every once in a while, especially if you’re going over something like a pothole, but when you can really feel the texture of the road, it might be time to have your suspension checked.
- Bad control while driving:
One job of your suspension system is to make steering easier. When your suspension starts failing, you might notice your car is harder to control. This can happen gradually, so make sure to pay extra attention if it feels like you have to put extra effort into steering.
You might also notice your car pulling to one side when trying to drive straight, or the body of your car leaning into turns or diving forward when you break. These are all signs of suspension failure, and can be dangerous!
- Sagging body:
This one is pretty simple. Take a good look at your car: is any part of it sagging? Oftentimes, this can happen at only one corner of the car. This can be an indicator that one of the springs in your suspension system has worn out. You may also hear unusual noises if you drive over potholes or speed bumps.
However, tires that are not evenly filled can also cause these problems. Make sure that all four tires are full and evenly filled. If you’re still noticing sagging or unusual noises over potholes, then you should start to suspect failing suspension.
- Indicator light
Maybe this seems obvious, but keep in mind that this isn’t your grandfather’s suspension system!
