An overheating engine doesn’t fix itself. Whether it happens during stop-and-go traffic or after a long drive, it’s usually a sign something’s off in your cooling system. Left unchecked, it can lead to serious engine damage and a repair bill no one wants.
If something seems off, keep an eye out for these issues.
Low Coolant or a Leak Somewhere in the System
Coolant helps regulate your engine temperature. When the level drops too low, heat builds up fast. This can happen from a slow leak, a crack in a hose, or a loose connection. We’ll pressure test the system, check the reservoir, and look for signs of fluid loss around the radiator, water pump, and heater core. If something’s leaking, we’ll find it and get it sealed up.
A Thermostat That’s Stuck Closed
If your thermostat doesn’t open like it’s supposed to, coolant can’t flow through the engine properly. That causes a quick spike in temperature, especially once the car is warmed up. This is a common failure point, and it’s usually an easy fix. We test it first, then replace it if needed using a part that fits your vehicle’s specs.
A Radiator That Isn’t Doing Its Job
Your radiator helps release heat from the coolant. When it gets clogged or corroded, it stops working as it should. You might notice coolant pooling under your car, or your engine might overheat during slow driving. We’ll inspect the radiator for signs of damage, test for flow issues, and clean or replace it depending on the condition.
A Failing Water Pump
The water pump keeps coolant moving through the system. If it goes bad, the circulation stops and temperatures rise fast. Sometimes you’ll hear a whining noise. Other times, you might spot coolant leaking near the front of the engine. We’ll check the pump and surrounding components and replace anything that’s starting to fail.
Cooling Fan Isn’t Kicking On
When your car’s not moving, the radiator relies on a fan to help pull heat away. If that fan doesn’t come on, especially in traffic or while idling, your car might start to overheat. We test the fan motor, relays, and sensors to make sure everything is working when it should.
