Banner signs offer colorful, temporary advertising solutions for indoor and outdoor spaces. The purpose and location of the banner determine the materials and style needed for fabrication. Before you order your next banner sign, consider the following four questions: 1. Will the custom banner sign be used for indoor or outdoor advertising? The answer to this question will guide most aspects of the fabrication process. An indoor versus an outdoor banner will obviously be exposed to Mother Nature differently and will require alternative methods for hanging. Evaluate closely! Even indoor signage can be exposed to UV light and glare when placed near windows and doorways. Think of the entire space when planning for your banner, and let the sign company know the details from the start. 2. How will the banner sign hang? Once the location is known, the method for hanging the banner can be determined. Will it be fastened directly to a wall, hung from ropes or ties, attached to a pole, stretched across a frame, or be secured with suction cups? (Do you have a crazy idea for hanging your banner? The manner in which the banner will be presented affects the construction of the banner. Grommets, pockets, stitching and other fine details come into play based on how and where the banner will be displayed. What are the lighting conditions for the sign? If the banner will be covered or in the great outdoors, will it be exposed to bright or harsh lighting conditions? Light causes glare, and that can make the banner difficult to read or see, which defeats the purpose of having the banner! Outdoor advertising, storefronts, window displays and stage backdrops all present environments that can expose the banner to a lot of light. In cases where light can be a problem, using banner material with a matte finish will help. 4. Could the banner be exposed to significant wind conditions? We actually had a customer contact us shortly after picking-up a banner because she forgot to mention the it would be located in a place that often has a lot of wind. Yikes! This can cause a problem if the banner does not have "wind slits" cut into the face of the vinyl material to let the wind pass through. Mesh banner material offers another solution for gusty locations. If there is a chance for wind, make sure that your banner is constructed to handle it. (If not, you may be chasing it down the road or across a field!)
