Spring Cleaning? Don’t Forget Your Signage!

BY: Your Name, Your Business

As the temperature rises and the flowers bloom, we often feel inspired to deep clean our homes and businesses. When you take a survey of the area that you want to clean, don’t forget your business signage! The signs you use for your business are often the first impressions your customers (and potential customers) view when they approach your location. Make this first impression a positive one with a clean and impressive sign!

As you inspect your sign, here are some questions to consider:

  • Did the winter weather leave its mark?
  • Is it coated with grime?
  • Is your sign being used as a restroom for any animals? (Eww!)
  • Has it just lost its luster?
  • Have any birds decided to call your sign home?
This smart bird found room and board in the FRIES sign.

Genuis bird! Not only did it find a cozy home within the letters of the ‘FRIES’ sign, it also found an easy source of the occasional snack! I’m sure there are plenty of dropped fries around this building! Sadly, it doesn’t make the signage look very appealing with a nest hanging out of it.

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the questions above, your sign definitely needs a little TLC. We have some tips to get you started.

Most signage will clean up nicely with a simple solution of mild detergent and plain old water. If you have acrylic or metal signage, you can mix a capful of gentle household cleaner (think Dawn or Palmolive) with a bucket of clean water. Wipe down the signage with a soft cloth or sponge that has been dampened with the soapy solution. To rinse, use another soft cloth and clean water. You can dry the sign by lightly buffing it with a soft polishing cloth. NOTE: Before using the cleaning solution on metal signs, please ensure that they are rust and corrosion resistant. If you have any questions or concerns before you begin cleaning away, feel free to contact us for some tips.

If you have an engraved sign, you can stick to the general method we described above. Sometimes engraved signs capture extra dirt and grime in the small details of the signage. If that’s the case with your sign, a soft wooden cuticle cleaner can be used to gently dig out the dirt. Once again, please contact us (or even send us a few photos) if you have any questions about the technique you should use.

Channel letter signage or signs with nice little nooks and crannies tend to make cozy homes for our little bird friends. Once the nest is removed and the sign is clean, we recommend these options to discourage the birds from nesting in the signage in the future. Of course, we love our avian friends…but just not in our signs!

Business signage is an investment and an advertising tool. It also gives an impression of your business. We don’t want a dirty, worn sign to give the wrong impression. Keep it clean! If we can assist you with your sign maintenance, please give us a call at 615-595-6564 or email us today.
