Project: Vinyl wrapped Gibson guitars
Location: Hollywood, CA
Client: The Geekie Awards
The annual Geekie Awards is a yearly celebration of all things to do with geek culture. The award show was starting by geek-industry vet Kristen Nedopak who wanted to create
something that celebrated the creative and unique productions of the geekie world. This year the organizers of The Geekie Awards wanted to auction off guitars to raise money for the Jim Henson Foundation—a charitable group that gives grants to help out contemporary American puppet theater. Gibson guitars was one of the official sponsors of the awards show this year and donated guitars that were going to be wrapped with a graphic design created by Dane Storrusten of Soulcake Creative, signed by geekie celebrities, and then auctioned off for charity. Gibson contacted us to print out and apply the graphics created by Storrusten to the guitars.
They sent us unfinished guitars that were just the un-lacquered wood shapes without any of the strings or hardware. We created a template that fit the designs perfectly to the faces of the guitar without spilling over on the sides. We also had to tweak the design files so the logo wouldn’t be hidden by the hardware after all the strings and other parts were put on. The cool part is that Gibson added the clear coat finish over our wrap graphics, so to anyone using the guitar it feels totally standard instead of feeling like the finish of a wrap.
The Geekie Awards aired live August 17 and the guitars were a hit! We really enjoyed working on them and hope that the award show continues to show off the awesomeness of geek culture for years to come.
