Combat the Wave of Illness New School Year Brings

Allergies in ChildrenSchool is back in session here in Southwest Florida, and you know what that means—kids are back together again, sharing more than just their summer stories. Especially in the younger grades, the start of the school year often brings a wave of sniffles, coughs, and the first colds of the season. As parents, we want to do everything we can to keep our children healthy, and the best way to combat this cycle of sickness is by strengthening their immune systems. A strong immune system is the cornerstone of good health. We’re exposed to countless viruses and bacteria every day, but we don’t always get sick—why? Because our immune system is there, working hard to protect us. But when our immune system is compromised, we’re more susceptible to whatever bug happens to be going around. There are several factors that can lower immune function, including:
  • Lack of sleep
  • Too much sugar
  • Stress
  • Lack of exercise
  • Nervous system disruption
You’re probably familiar with most of these, but you might be wondering, “What exactly is nervous system disruption?” Well, let me explain. The nervous system controls every other system in the body, including the immune system. When the nervous system is functioning properly, it helps keep the immune system strong. The spine, particularly the upper spine, plays a critical role in how the nervous system communicates, and by extension, how well the immune system functions. Research has shown that chiropractic patients often have remarkably strong immune systems. For instance, Dr. Ronald Pero, chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventive Medicine Institute, conducted a study on 107 individuals who had received long-term chiropractic care. He found that these patients had a 200% greater immune competence than those who had not received chiropractic care, and an astonishing 400% greater immune competence than people with cancer or other serious diseases. Dr. Pero concluded, “Chiropractic may optimize whatever genetic abilities you have so that you can fully resist serious disease.” Another compelling study conducted in 1995 involved HIV patients, whose immune systems are severely compromised by the virus. The study measured CD4 cells, which are crucial because they help recruit other immune cells to fight infections. The study divided patients into two groups—one received specific upper cervical chiropractic care, while the control group did not. Over six months, the group receiving adjustments saw a 48% increase in CD4 cells, while the control group experienced an 8% decrease. That’s a powerful testament to the impact of upper cervical chiropractic on immune function. So, if you want to give your child’s immune system a boost this school year, here’s what you can do:
  1. Make sure they get enough sleep—bedtimes matter!
  2. Cut down on sugar—replace sugary drinks with water or naturally flavored options.
  3. Encourage healthy eating—fruits, veggies, and nutritious snacks go a long way.
  4. Keep them active—exercise is great for the body and the immune system.
  5. Get their upper cervical spine checked—ensure their nervous system is functioning optimally.
A stronger immune system will help keep your kids from catching every bug that goes around, reduce allergic reactions, and even help manage conditions like asthma. Let’s start this school year off right—healthy and strong! Don't let your kids start the school year off sick. The positive effects of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Treatment extend beyond conventional approaches, addressing the root cause of nerve issues in the upper cervical spine.
