Vertigo and dizziness are two of the most common conditions I treat patients for at Upper Cervical Health Centers of Fort Myers. Often patients can trace these issues back to a car accident, slipping and falling down, or some other type of trauma. Most have tried various treatments and seen multiple doctors and health care providers. Even advanced imaging technologies, like MRIs leave them in the dark about how to fix the issue.
Myself, and other upper cervical chiropractors have been achieving remarkable results with both balance disorders and headaches for a long time. In my office, we have a 90% success rate, but the exact reason for our success wasn’t always clear. Recent research, however, has us looking at cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow as a possible cause of these issues, with upper cervical chiropractic techniques offering a solution. Using upright MRI, researchers demonstrated a disturbance in the CSF flow exiting the skull. After an upper cervical correction, a follow-up MRI showed normal CSF flow. With the fluid back in proper circulation, patients in the study found relief from their headaches and dizziness.
CSF is vital because it protects the brain and spinal cord, removes waste, and delivers nutrients. It’s produced in the brain, exits the skull, and travels down the spinal canal. If the upper neck is misaligned, it can compress the tissue around the spine and block the CSF, preventing it from flowing properly out of the skull. This blockage leads to increased pressure inside the skull. Since the pressure can’t escape outwardly, it turns inward, squeezing the brain. When the brain is squeezed, blood flow in the brain can diminish, triggering vertigo attacks, migraines, and lightheaded spells.
While not all balance disorders and headaches are caused by disrupted CSF flow or a previous neck injury, I’ve found that many cases start with an upper cervical misalignment. Correcting that misalignment can lead to dramatic improvements. A short, non-invasive upper cervical examination can determine whether this correction might be the answer for those suffering from these conditions.
Many of my patients come to me as a last resort, frustrated and exhausted from trying various treatments that didn’t work. Seeing their relief after an upper cervical adjustment is incredibly rewarding. It’s fascinating how interconnected our bodies are, and how something as seemingly minor as a misalignment in the upper neck can have such a profound impact on our overall health.
If you’re struggling with vertigo, dizziness, or headaches and haven’t found a solution, consider exploring upper cervical chiropractic care. It might just be the missing piece in your healthcare puzzle.
