The first significant difference is the material. Technicians might make fabricated metal letters using stainless steel, aluminum, or brass. In contrast, plastic is a material that almost everyone knows and has some experience with. However, there are some differences.
Fabricated vs. Formed
When you select metal for your material of choice, technicians will reproduce the specs you provide with lasers or routers. Doing so results in crisp edges, perfectly fitting fronts and returns, and hollow backs. Welding ensures the proper connection between returns and faces.
Plastic is formed in a font that is as close as possible to your specs. If necessary, technicians will create a mold specifically for your font. The most remarkable difference here is that you can select unique facings that might be beveled, prismatic, or even rounded. That said, flat faces are doable, too.
Finishing vs. Painting
Most clients like to display the stunning metal look and ask for a finish rather than paint. Examples include polishes for highly reflective surfaces, brushed designs for metal to prevent glare, and even the use of false patinas. The latter is popular with clients who do business out of older brick buildings and similar locales. That said, metal letters are perfectly paintable.
Formed plastic is typically selected for custom painting. Sometimes, clients like the standard plastic colors so much that they prefer to keep them. A newer option is the addition of a chrome finish that gives the plastic a stunning look.
Formed and Fabricated Letters are Durable
Both materials are famous for their durability and the ability to withstand even harsh environmental conditions. If your company’s building is close to the coast, we recommend using metal. The salt and sand in the air can be abrasive and mar the good looks of the signage. Of course, it is always possible to repaint the plastic.
