Tips on Choosing A Moving Company 6 | Ask the moving company to show you how to compare estimates
Don’t just look at the bottom line of the estimate since this amount could be greatly undervalued. When reviewing estimates always compare the complete list of items being moved. Make sure that it shows everything, especially all of the cartons to be moved, in addition to the furniture. If in doubt, assume the company that has more items is correct and not the estimate with the fewest items.
Always make sure that all access conditions are included in each estimate. Consider the access conditions from a mechanical standpoint and identify physical factors the movers will need to deal with when loading the truck and unloading at your destination. Access conditions include things like:
1) How many steps are required to get into each home or office?
2) How many flights of stairs are at each location?
3) Is there a steep hill where the moving truck will need to park?
4) Is there a twisty driveway the truck needs to use?
5) Is there a piano or elevator involved?
Once you have your written estimates on estimate forms, a reputable moving company should be able to show you how to compare them. It’s important that each estimate is complete and in writing. Make sure all contents to be moved are included and that all access conditions have been detailed. This allows you to compare estimates accurately but it also helps the moving company be sure they’ve assigned enough men to complete your job properly on moving day.
