Are you aware of the common fire hazards in hospitals? Here are a few of them. Whether it’s a residential property or a commercial one, fire safety is a must. Fires are nasty and can originate from the most unexpected of sources. Speaking of commercial fires, hospitals and health care facilities are no exception. Furthermore, in a hospital, there are several patients, and some of them aren’t even in the condition to protect them if a fire breaks out. For bedridden patients, evacuation ad mobility is difficult in the case of a fire. In this article, we shall discuss some of the common fire hazards in Hospitals. Kitchen Fires Let’s break it down. X-Ray Films  Unfortunately, many of the hospitals are very careless when it comes to storing X-ray films. The X-ray film is made up of nitrocellulose. This material heats up very quickly, and once it reaches 300 degrees, it turns into explosive gas. The x-ray film must never be stored near a heat source, or else it can cause a major fire accident.  Electrical Equipment  Unlike any other commercial setting, a hospital is home to numerous electrical appliances. Oftentimes, sockets and extensions are overworked, and they bear a load of several machines at a time. Overworked sockets can lead to severe fire hazards. Furthermore, in some hospitals, electrical cords are daisy-chained to one another, which is a major violation of laws. Kitchen Fires  The kitchen is where all the cooking takes place. With gas stoves and microwave ovens, the kitchen is the perfect environment for a fire accident to take place. Sometimes, the kitchen staff leaves cooking pots unattended on the stoves while they are burning, which also causes fire accidents. Also, the cabinets and the areas above the stoves can have grease buildups, which are flammable. Smoking  One of the most common causes of fires in medical facilities is smoking. Because of smoking, numerous fire accidents have taken place in the past. As a result, the authorities have banned smoking inside commercial settings. A hospital is where a majority of flammable chemicals and materials are used. A carelessly tossed lit cigarette coming in contact with any of these flammables can burn the entire place down in minutes. Despite the restrictions, some careless individuals sneak cigarettes inside. Specialist Equipment  Another ignition hazard in health facilities is the lasers and electrosurgical machines. They can lead to a deadly fire outbreak when they come into contact with oxygen tanks, sterilizing equipment, and surgical clothes. Alcohol-Based Products  Speaking of alcohol-based products, the hand sanitizers installed throughout the hospitals contain a significant amount of alcohol. Alcohol is a flammable substance and can lead to a fire accident. These sanitizers shouldn’t be installed to close to heat sources. If you are the person in charge, make sure the electrical connections in your health facility are inspected regularly. Also, to avoid dangerous fire accidents on your health facility, place combustible objects and substances at a safe distance from the sources of heat.
