Safety Signs Built for Hixson Emergencies

Power cuts and smoke starts filling the corridor from somewhere down the hall that nobody can pinpoint yet. Staff need to get residents out, and half of those residents can’t walk on their own. Visibility drops by the second. That exit sign that looked fine during last month’s inspection is gone. Swallowed by haze right when people need it most. This is the moment safety signage exists for, and decisions made months earlier in calm conference rooms determine whether anyone can see where to go. Visual Impression Sign Solutions builds safety signage for Hixson care facilities because protecting residents deserves more than checking boxes.

Do Glow Strips Actually Keep Glowing?
Photoluminescent materials soak up ambient light during normal hours and release that stored energy as a visible glow when darkness hits. Strips along corridor floors guide evacuation routes when those ceiling-mounted exit signs vanish into smoke overhead. We use 3M and Jessup materials that meet ASTM E2072 standards for emergency egress marking.

Here’s the spec that matters: quality materials hold 30 mcd/m² at the ten-minute mark and still put out 5 mcd/m² after a full hour. Cheap imports from overseas glow bright for maybe twenty minutes and then fade to nothing while your evacuation is still underway.

Why Mount Exit Signs Down Low?
Smoke rises. During a fire, it banks up at ceiling level first and then pushes downward as conditions get worse. A standard exit sign mounted high on the wall becomes invisible even while the power still works because smoke blocks the view before it blocks your breathing. NFPA 101 allows low-level exit signs mounted between 6 and 18 inches off the floor for exactly this reason. Photoluminescent signs at that height stay visible during those critical early minutes when most evacuation movement actually happens. We look at each facility’s layout and think through what mobility limitations the resident population brings to the equation.

Can Staff Actually Find Extinguishers Fast Enough?
Extinguishers only work if someone can grab one quickly while conditions are still manageable. Location signs above stations need photoluminescent elements that meet OSHA 1910.157 requirements for visibility at 75 feet minimum distance. Here’s a mistake we see all the time: signs mounted directly behind the extinguisher. The equipment itself blocks the sign from view when you’re looking down a smoky corridor. We mount location signs above and offset to the side so staff can spot them from multiple approach angles.

Do Those Evacuation Maps Actually Help Anyone?
Posted maps help staff who don’t know the building find exits when everything gets chaotic. NFPA 101 requires one at each egress door and then every 150 feet after that. Put them in the wrong spots and you’ve spent money on maps nobody looks at when they need them most.

We install maps where people naturally stop and look around, like near elevators and at building entries. The substrates are .040 aluminum with UV-resistant laminate because paper behind glass deteriorates over the years of waiting for an emergency that hopefully never comes.

Will Floor Graphics Hold Up to Daily Abuse?
Safety graphics on floors take a beating from wheelchairs, equipment carts, and whatever cleaning chemicals housekeeping uses that week. Standard vinyl gets destroyed within months under those conditions. We spec 3M 680CR with 2.5-mil textured laminate that provides slip resistance meeting ANSI A137.1 standards. Surface prep makes or breaks adhesion. 3M Primer 94 gives floor graphics the bond they need to stay put despite daily punishment.

Room Signs for When Fire Crews Show Up
Firefighters searching for a specific resident need to read room numbers when normal lighting has failed. We build room signs with photoluminescent elements meeting UL 924 emergency visibility standards. Letters at a 2-inch height minimum with strong contrast ratios stay readable when responders are working fast under pressure.

Going Beyond What Code Requires
NFPA and IBC set the floor for acceptable performance in nursing care facilities. Passing inspection means you’ve hit adequate. It doesn’t mean you’ve hit optimal for what actually happens during emergencies.

Your resident population includes people with mobility limitations, cognitive impairments, and medical situations that make evacuation complicated. Basic code compliance covers generic occupancies. It may not cover the specific risks your specific residents face when things go wrong. Extra egress marking, additional signage, and redundant systems give you margin when you need it most.

We help facilities figure out where enhanced measures make sense, given their layout and who actually lives there. Visual Impression Sign Solutions serves Hixson care facilities with safety signage built for real emergencies. Call (423) 635-7144 to talk through what your facility actually needs.
