Oil Does More Than Lubricate
People think of oil as just slippery stuff that keeps parts moving. It does that, but it does a lot more. It carries heat away from the moving parts. It picks up dirt and metal bits and holds them in suspension so the filter can catch them. It fights corrosion inside the engine. Fresh oil handles all of that at once.
The additives that do this work wear out with use and heat. That is the part people forget.
What Old Oil Turns Into
As oil ages, it breaks down. It gets thick and dark, loaded with the grit it has been carrying. Now instead of protecting the engine, it starts working against it:
- Thickened oil does not flow into tight spots as fast, so parts wear
- Dirt-loaded oil turns into sludge that clogs passages
- Worn additives stop fighting heat and corrosion
- A clogged filter lets unfiltered oil circulate
On the smaller EcoBoost engines the Escape uses, clean oil matters even more. Turbocharged engines run hotter and harder on their oil, and they punish neglect faster than a basic motor does.
How Often the Escape Needs It
The right interval depends on your engine and how you drive. The turbo engines generally want fresh oil sooner than the naturally aspirated ones. Short trips, stop-and-go traffic, and Bay Area heat all count as harder use, which shortens the interval.
