The alternator in Camrys is prone to fail over time, and we will discuss what the alternator does, along with a few warning signs which could point to the need for replacement. Read on to learn why we’re the perfect team to help if you do have an alternator issue.
The Role of an Alternator
All gas-powered cars have an alternator. The alternator is the part of the vehicle which converts the mechanical energy produced by the engine into electrical energy in the car. This means the alternator is responsible for powering all the electrical components of your vehicle. Over time, alternators can fail due to normal wear and tear, exposure to excessive heat, or electrical malfunctions. Typically, alternators can last for a very long time, but when you have an issue there are usually many warning signs. In the next few sections, we will discuss a few of these symptoms of a failing alternator.
Frequently Dead Battery
A large part of the power created by the alternator goes to the car’s battery. The reason car batteries can last for such a long time is because every time the car is on, the alternator creates power which is directed into the battery, actively recharging it as long as the car is on. When the alternator fails, this power is not directed into the battery, so it never recharges. When this happens, the battery is fine, it’s just not receiving any charge. If your battery is dying quickly, the alternator is likely to blame.
Weak or No Electronics
As stated previously, the alternator powers all the electronics in the car. When it’s going bad, the electrically-powered components might be slow, unresponsive, or not work at all. This can present itself in windows which move slowly, radio or screen not coming on, flickering or dim dashboard lights, and/or the heating and air system fan not performing as intended. In addition to these symptoms, sometimes a struggling alternator might not be able to power the headlights or the directionals of the vehicle. If you are experiencing multiple symptoms listed above, you probably need a new alternator.
