Many people choose to purchase an Audi vehicle due to the smooth ride they offer, in addition to many other luxury and performance features. Because Audis offer an easy driving experience and comfortable ride, it’s usually easy to feel when there is a suspension issue.
As Audis age, there are some key suspension components to keep an eye on in terms of wear and tear. The A6 is among the most popular Audi cars, but it’s not immune to these suspension problems.
Luckily, our team of local auto pros has diagnosed, repaired, and serviced many A6s over the years. We’re proud to be the go-to source for all things related to luxury vehicles for people across the Campbell, San Jose, Los Gatos, and Saratoga area, and we’re sure to be able to provide great service for you as well.
In this article, we will discuss some common reasons why the A6’s suspension can fail, and provide insight into our diagnosis and repair process.
Control Arms Loose, Worn, or Damaged
The most common issue when a suspension feels loose on a rough road is a problem with the car’s control arms. On the A6, the control arms are designed to allow the car to keep a consistent feel, even when driving over a bumpy road. These control arms can fill with fluid, wear over time, or become damaged during driving, which can lead to a loose feel when driving. We see this issue frequently on the A6 and other Audi models, and typically we can repair or replace control arms easily, allowing you to get back on the road quickly.
Failing Suspension Connections
The suspension system on the A6 is composed of many parts, and they are all held together with various links, bolts, and other connections. Over time, these connection points can wear, break, or become weaker. With the A6, the most common weak points we see are in the sway bar links and the subframe bolts. The sway bar links are known to wear over time, and when they are not firmly connected, the car might feel like it’s struggling to maintain level and make noise when going over bumps. When the subframe bolts are loose, noises are also common. In either case, if you hear strange noises when turning or going over bumps, it’s likely time for a professional diagnosis.
Air Suspension Problems
Many A6 models can attribute their smooth ride in part to an air suspension system. While not present on all A6s, an air suspension is a sophisticated system which uses electronic sensors to control the height and tension of the vehicle. Air suspension is great when it works, but the complexity of the system can lead to issues over time. If the car has a strange stance, you notice warning lights, or it just feels like your car is more rough or bouncy when driving, the air suspension could be to blame.
