In America, there are around 2.5 million people who are suffering from impairment in their vision. The signs that are compliant with ADA help to achieve accessibility for people with visual impairments, as well as seniors.

There are certain guidelines that you need to follow to make sure your sign is ADA-compliant:

1. The Sign Should Have A Glare-Free Finish

People who are suffering from visual impairment have a problem processing the reflections or glares easily. That is why the sign should not have any glare so that everyone can read and understand the sign without any difficulty.

This can be done by making sure that you get a matte finish so that it is ADA-compliant. This rule is mainly for indoor signs, and the outdoor signs do not have to follow this rule.

2. The Sign Should Have Appropriate Fonts

The fonts that are used on the sign should be readable. People should not have to squint their eyes in order to decipher the signs. Use fonts that are clear and have high readability.

A Sans Serif font works perfectly for this. Use the one that is plain and easy to read. Some commonly used ADA-compliant fonts are Helvetica, Futura, and Verdana. Also, you need to ensure that the sign is not italicized, decorative, or oblique.

3. The Sign Should Have A Striking Contrast

Due to the striking contrast, it will be easier for people who are visually impaired to read the sign and follow them. The contrasts help in enhancing the readability. If you do not have a good level of contrast, the characters may blend into the background and can be lost. This will create confusion.

Hence, the signs should have a high level of contrast when it comes to the background and characters.

The most often used colors for signs are black on white or white on black; this is due to the fact that they have high contrast and tend to increase the readability.

If you are opting for a directional or informational sign, you can use uppercase letters as well as lowercase letters. The rules regarding this are quite complicated and are different for all the signs.

For the sizing of the letters, you need to determine the distance from the sign to be seen. The height of the letters should range between 5/8th of an inch to 2 inches.

Make sure that the letters and words have a sufficient amount of spacing between them.

The thickness of the stroke of the characters should also be kept in mind. The uppercase “I” should have a stroke thickness that ranges from 15% of the height of the character.
