Which wayfinding signs can you use to help your customers find and navigate through your business building? Read on to find out the types of wayfinding signs you can use!

Have you ever been lost in a huge commercial building? Well, if you have, then you know just how important it is to place wayfinding signs to facilitate your customers.

Here are four types of wayfinding signs that you can use to help your customers find your office without any hassle:

Identification

Identification signs are the most widely used wayfinding signs and for good reason; they tell a person when they have arrived at their intended location. Think of them as wayfinding landmarks. They will help your customers get their bearings when they are lost and unable to spot your office building or floor. Make sure to design your identification signs to be clear and uncluttered as their whole point is to help out a confused person find their way. Examples of identification signs include door plaques, landmark signage, and departmental markers.

Directional

Think of directional signs as a helpful hand that guides your customers to their destination, one step at a time. They are the ideal wayfinding signs for junctions or areas with less traffic flow. Diverse directional signs help out potentials customers who might be visiting your office building for the first time and are unfamiliar with the lay of the land. The key to great directional signs is strategic placement; you don’t want potential customers to get lost between two directional signs. Primary examples of directional signs include junction signs, colored lines on the floor, and directory signs.

Informational

Informational signs give customers broad information that they need to navigate through your building. It’s best to place information wayfinding signs in areas where there’s heavy traffic flow such as building entrances, lobbies, and waiting rooms. These signs usually have information such as the location of the office elevators and washrooms, free amenities offered by the building, and general business information on office hours and address numbers. Make sure to use universally understood symbols on your information signs to make them effective.

Regulatory

Regulatory signs mention your building’s safety and liability concerns. They are your way of telling your customers exactly what is and isn’t acceptable in your office building. These signs are used by offices to establish and reinforce certain safety standards, rules, and privacy expectations. Regulatory signs are often used in combination with informational signs and they display clear messages such as “no smoking” or “no pets” symbols. They are considered as wayfinding or navigational signs because they are often used as access control signs that you can use to mark certain areas of your building as “employees only”.

All of these signs work best when used in combination with each other.  For instance, regulatory signs will allow your customers to keep out of certain restricted areas as they use the directional signs to reach their destination. Just make sure that all of your wayfinding signs are simple, cohesive, and easy to understand.
