Shift Team Unmotivation Into Successful Leaders

BY: , Your Business

Our staff and our teams are vital to the success of our organizations: highly engaged and motivated teams have greater productivity and performance and go above and beyond to reach their fullest potential – because they find value in their positions and their organization.

So when our staff and our teams are unmotivated and disengaged, we find ourselves struggling in our organizations, dwelling in a discouraging workplace culture where individuals do not know why they are there, are not motivated to drive the organization forward, and do not believe they can grow into leaders, advance, or thrive in their positions.

Fortunately, there are strategies we can use to cultivate engaged and skilled teams who believe in themselves and their organizations.

How Unmotivated Teams Stunt Business Growth

Unmotivated teams can cause significant stagnation – and even decline – in growth: they will not be motivated to achieve targets, objectives, and goals, which means less productivity and lower performance, which affects the quality of your goods and services.

Why Working With a Certified Coach Improves Individual and Team Development

So what are your options when you struggle with motivating individuals or teams and improving company culture? Requesting professional assistance from a third party is a practical solution.

The advantage of working with a business coach is having an objective professional to assess your relationship with your team and their behavioral styles, concerns, and the effectiveness of their collaboration.

Using my team behavioral report and workplace motivator repower, we collect valuable information on the strengths of your team and organization to cultivate improvement and engagement and then participate in critical team-building where you exchange feedback and strategize team and individual development.

Top Three Steps to Immediately Start Motivating the Unmotivated

In my latest video, I explain three critical strategies I use with clients to reinvigorate individuals and teams and create inspiring workplaces.

TRANSCRIPT

Hi, I’m Dr. Terry Daniels with FocalPoint Leadership Coaching.

I’m often asked by clients, “How do I help the unmotivated to become more motivated?”

I believe that when we figure this piece out, our organizations can be a gamechanger. It moves the needle in a very real way. So let’s think about how we help the unmotivated to become motivated. I often provide three suggestions:

  • Seek to build a personal connection.
  • Be clear on performance expectations.
  • Consistently reinforce good effort and action.

I’ll say those three things again: seek to build a personal connection, build on clear performance expectations, and consistently reinforce good effort and actions. I want to go just a little bit deeper on each one of those.

When I say seek to build a personal connection, three things that I would do there:

  • Recognize a good quality when you see that in an individual. Find common ground that you can share with the person – or even ask for their input and ideas. That can help you build a personal connection with the unmotivated.
  • Secondly, I said to be clear on performance expectations. Some things we may be able to do there: keep my expectations simple and concise. Seek to make sure they understand those expectations and also make sure you offer your support so they can be successful.
  • The third thing I said was consistently reinforce good effort and actions. What can I do to help build that one? Follow up: people know that they will be active when you inspect what you expect. Ask how they’ve been successful in the past with different initiatives, projects, and tasks, and share any wins publicly that you all can agree on is a win.

If you do those three things, I think that you can help the unmotivated to become more motivated.

Three things: seek to build a personal connection, be clear on performance expectations, and consistently reinforce good effort and action. Three things: if you do those, you will begin to change your world, you will begin to change your workplace, and, more importantly, you will begin to change the unmotivated to be more inclusive and engaged in what you’re trying to build and achieve.

Let’s connect.

You can reach me at tdaniels@focalpointcoaching.com. I look forward to hearing from you to go just a little bit deeper on how to help your unmotivated to become motivated. Have a great one.
