Assisted living communities are like any other place. If you get lost there, you won’t be able to find your way around. Signs are the best way to locate buildings and roads. There are several types of signs including ADA signs, building signs, monument signs, and directional signs. Below a selection of the most important signs for a senior living community.

ADA signs aren’t like regular signs. There are specific requirements, especially in ADA buildings. Sign Partners makes sure when designing the signs that they are ADA Compliant so you don’t have to worry about the complicated part. ADA Compliant rules and regulations can be incorporated without having so sacrifice on the design. A few simple guidelines to keep in mind for ADA Signs.

  • Copy & Braille: The copy on ADA signs should be a minimum size and should be raised. Furthermore all copy needs to have braille.
  • Letter Type: Upper Case (signs for permanent rooms and spaces), Upper or Lower Case (directional signs and overhead signs)
  • Letter Style: Sans Serif font
  • Contrast: characters and symbols must contrast with background color

Directional Signs

Signs that point to different places are important. They help guide people from one floor to another and from room to room. Trying to find a common area like the lunch room isn’t easy. Directional signs help find those places as well. Other places to visit within a building include the restroom and water fountains.

Directional signs are needed within a senior living community as well. Residents can travel from one part of the campus to another by following directional signs. They could be signs on footpaths, signs on the road, or signs placed overhead.

Building Signs

Senior living facilities have lots of buildings and they need signs. One building could be designed for treating the elderly, another could be used to house the able. Another building may have storage. Signs help employees get around. Delivery drivers and visitors need signs to navigate around the buildings and arrive at the right place. Building signs are important and necessary part of senior living centers.

A Monument Sign is usually a large sign on the main road indicating the Assisted Living Facility. Depending on how many roads lead to the facility, more monument signs might be required. Monument signs can be illuminated or non-illuminated depending on the specific need.

Signs are everywhere including assisted living buildings. If there aren’t any in your building, then it’s time to order some. It’s a good idea to have a list of signs you may need or just count the number of buildings, intersections, and roadways. In the buildings, count the floors and common sections. This is usually a good start.
