Storm damage leaves roofs vulnerable, experts warn

Monsoon season has finally reached New Mexico.  While the rain is a blessing, the strength of the storms we have had has been surprising.  For some homeowners, the storms have caused more than just emergency service phone alerts for Flash Flood Warnings. Many homeowners in the Albuquerque/Rio Rancho area have experienced substantial roof damage from the wind and rain.  Below are some examples of the various degrees of damage seen around town. One family with a home that has a rooftop swamp cooler unit discovered a hole in the roof caused by a storm knocking the swamp cooler off center, causing water to saturate the roof and weaken the building materials.  A warehouse in southeast Albuquerque experienced a roof collapse due to the amount of water that accrued on the building over the weekend.  An Albuquerque home has also sustained roof damage due to the high winds and lashing rain. While all of these instances are unfortunate, you can do your part to minimize damage done to your home or business.  After the storm has subsided, be sure to inspect the building for any visible structural damage.  This includes damage to the roof, the exterior walls, windows, and any outdoor swamp cooler or refrigerated air units.  If there is water that has accumulated on the roof, small amounts can be left to evaporate.  However, larger amounts of water that are not properly draining may need to be siphoned off.  This can be done with a regular garden hose or a shop vac, if you have one. If you do see damage and want to have it checked and fixed right away, STOP Restoration is open 24/7.  (505) 892-3112
