Over the past couple weekends New Mexico got hit by a major rainstorm that caused a lot of damage to homes, businesses and dams locally. At STOP Restoration (Service Team of Professionals) we have been extremely busy trying to repair damage from this storm. There is little that one can do to prevent complete damage, but you can minimize it. Here are a few steps you can take to help protect your home and valuables.

When you have warning of rain storms coming into your area there are a few steps one can take to help minimize possible damage. If your house or business has rain gutters along the the roof of a structure it is best to make sure they are clear of any debris. This will help to prevent and overflow of water running along the siding, which can cause damage to paint and and wood. If there is a basement, the water can flow into there causing flooding. Any drains to or from a basement should be sealed off, along with windows. Blocking water from coming in under door jams with towels and bags is never a bad idea.

Switching off electrical devices plugged in, or better yet at the main switcher box is encouraged. If there is any leaking from your roof, a single drop could easily cause an electrical fire to ignite. Designate an area for valuables then covering with plastic or tarps can also help to minimize damage. Furniture and beds can be covered as well. In case of leaking, protecting your floors are important; the same method of covering furniture can be utilized in this area as well.

Often high winds come along with the rain. It’s always a good idea before and after a storm to check shingles and anything else that is atop your structure. Confirmation that all items are securely fastened down will help to ease peace of mind should the wind factor kick up into high gear. Making certain any items that could become airborne in high winds will help to reduce risk of broken windows and siding panels.
