You can’t plan without having goals. Many businesses set goals which are broad, unspecific and not helpful. Simply saying you want to grow or increase sales won’t help guide your company forward. Instead, take the time to determine what you want your company to look like in an ideal situation and then shape your goals in this ideal image. With specific goals in place, you can effectively plan for the future. When I work with new clients, my first task is to fully understand their goals so we can make a plan to reach them.
Examine Your Operation Internally
Planning does involve looking externally for ways to make your company match your vision, but smart planning also involves internal examination. By looking at your processes, procedures, team members and equipment, you can determine if your company is running at peak efficiency. A business coach is especially helpful here as a new set of experienced eyes who can identify areas for improvement. By perfecting your operations internally and continuing to improve, you can be ready to move forward when the right opportunities for growth arise.
Seek Appropriate Opportunities
Whether it’s opening a new location, offering a new product or any other opportunity for growth, you should consider these using the lens of your overall goals. Just because there might be an opportunity for growth on the table doesn’t always make it the right choice. Part of the planning process involves discussing which opportunities would be worth taking, and constantly keeping your finger on the pulse of your market to determine if there are any threats to your company.
