Tampa’s Junior Achievement, like many across the country, has a whole city inside one building. This working city, called “Biztown”, is used by Tampa Bay area students to really experience first hand what it takes to be part of the working community. This means JA had to imitate individual stores, restaurants, banks, and community buildings. In order to give the sense of an entire working city, they needed individual “exterior” business signs, in many shapes and sizes, to hang on or above each store. It is a real life concept that has been teaching life lessons to new students each year for decades. Once students step inside the building, they must buy in to the concept that it is a working city. Volunteers, props and divided spaces aren’t enough.
JA knew there was one more essential addition…signs.
Signs are all around us everyday and serve many functions. It’s no different here. Signs are integral in creating a familiar and believable atmosphere. Like real life, signs help these students recognize places of business and their services. They help them navigate around unfamiliar areas and get them where they need to go safely. This is exactly how all of us, including your clients or future customers operate. There is no better example of the importance of good, quality indoor and outdoor signage than at “Biztown”. Signs help students go from one business to another more efficiently to complete their individual tasks. An extremely important asset since their time running this city is limited. The JA staff and volunteers distribute jobs to each of the students mentoring them on their positions in the community before they let them go. This program gives young people real world experience they can’t get anywhere else. At the same time these students learn the value of money, marketing, networking, etc., they are also experiencing the value of good signage. Make sure your company signage is doing it’s job.
