Business pro discusses leadership qualities
An effective corporate executive can ensure a company runs at peak efficiency, and while many executives are master decision makers or strategists, effective leadership is a common skill which the most successful executives share.
Leadership is not something a person is born with, but instead it is a skill which can be honed and perfected over time through training, coaching and experience. Becoming an effective leader does not happen overnight, but if a person is willing to lead and works at it, they can be a great leader regardless of their personality type, the industry they are in or the position they currently hold.
As a business coach in the Phoenix area, I have had the privilege of working with several great leaders, and some not-so-great ones as well. Combining my experience in the corporate world with my years as a business coach, I have determined a few key traits of leaders which the most effective ones all share.
While there are other common traits, these are the ones I feel are most important, and the ones we cover the most in leadership training. As you read on, you will notice none of these are specific to a personality type or experience level. Leaders are made through experience and desire, not by following a stereotypical personality type, so if you want to be a great leader, work on these skills and be yourself.
Communication
A business executive is often the link between the goals of ownership and the people on the ground performing the duties to reach those goals. An effective leader is a great communicator, because they need to have the ability to clearly tell their team members what their role is and how they expect the job to be done.
Delegation
The biggest pain point for someone transitioning from a role in a company working on their own to a leadership role is the change from working under someone else’s direction to overseeing people who work on the ground. Leaders who have trouble letting go of daily duties and training, coaching and trusting others to get those tasks accomplished cannot truly work in an executive role. Effective delegation does not mean the leader is averse to jumping in when needed, but rather they can oversee the operation as a whole and assign tasks to people who have the correct skills to get them done, freeing up the leader to look at the bigger picture.
Motivation
A great leader increases morale in the organization by treating their team members with respect and learning about their needs, wants and learning style. The best leaders understand people must be managed differently, depending on how they prefer to learn and what their personal and professional goals are. Effective leaders know their team members, let them know how their role impacts the company and can effectively motivate them to succeed.
