Make sure your signs look as good as possible

Exterior signage is necessary for almost any business, and selecting the right sign material, location and design can help your business attract many new clients.

Custom-made signs aren’t cheap, and business owners are often uneducated about the way to keep these signs up and make sure they look great after they are installed.

Our company is based right here in Connecticut, and we have helped several businesses find their ideal exterior sign solution. Since these signs are exposed to the elements, over time they will collect dust, dirt, bird droppings and other grime which can decrease their effectiveness.

Luckily, there are simple steps you can take to clean a sign and keep it from being replaced or refurbished. Below you will find a few of our best tips for sign upkeep.

Don’t Pressure Wash

Many times, businesses hire a pressure washing service to clean the exterior of their buildings and/or sidewalks. While it might be tempting to ask the pressure washing contractor to hit the sign while they’re at it, this should be avoided with any exterior sign.

Pressure washing is a harsh process and can take years off the life of any exterior sign. The best approach is gentler.

Treat The Sign Like A Car

Instead of pressure washing, using the same methods you might use on a nice car can effectively clean the sign and preserve its appearance.

Specialized car soaps which contain wax can have the same protective qualities on a sign as they do on a vehicle. Similarly to washing a nice car, you will want to use a soft sponge or a brush with very soft bristles.

The best process is to provide a generous lather and gently clean the sign without scrubbing or applying pressure, which could scratch the sign or damage the finish. When done, rinse the sign with a garden hose on a low setting.

Things To Avoid

We already covered water pressure, but it’s deserving of another mention here. Keep pressure to a minimum, even from a hose. If you must use a pressure washer, use it on the lowest setting.

Many exterior signs are made of acrylic. If you have an acrylic sign, don’t dry it with any type of towel. Even the softest material can scratch the finish.

Cleaners with strong chemicals like paint thinners, mineral spirits, acids or cleaners which feature an abrasive quality should be avoided. Car wash soap or dish soap is the best choice. Ensure the sponges or brushes you use to wash the sign are soft and won’t scratch the surface.

As a final note on things to watch out for, irrigation systems should not point toward exterior signs. The chemicals in these systems can damage the sign quickly.

All signs will fade over time regardless of the material used. Regular cleaning can extend the life of the sign and can alert you to potential issues before they become bigger problems.
