G-Force Signs & Graphics recently worked on a project involving the installation of interpretive signage for a local historical site called The Darien Foundation in Darien, CT. They were looking for help with historical markers for the town’s Bicentennial. They wanted to tell the story of the town and its rich history. Each of the historical markers was installed at different historical sites around town.

Interpretive signs are used in many parks, zoos, aquariums and historical sites as a way to get information across to their visitors. This is a specialized type of sign intended to be viewed up close by a “captive audience” – people who intend on taking the time to read and view the content in the sign. Interpretive signs can have many purposes from showing the history of the area to explaining how something works.

The interpretive signs designed were precise, easy to read, and interesting. They were made with durable high-pressure laminate panels and high-resolution print to make them one of the most durable and long-lasting signs. Interpretive signs have to be engaging, ensuring that the sign is not overly instructive to point visitors to lose interest. Here are some design features that a good interpretive sign should have:

Summarized and Focused

The information presented in the signage should be summarized and free from any unnecessary details. People won’t bother to read long paragraphs filled with intricate details. For example, mentioning the entire biography of a key character on an interpretive sign for a historical site. Instead, just mention the essentials.

Also, the information should be relevant to the site; describing the piping layout on an interpretive sign for a water park is just a poor design. Instead, you could put up a map showing the entrances, exits, and changing rooms. Information that is helpful for the viewers.

Includes Pictures

Having a sign with only text on it and no pictures immediately comes off as uninteresting for the people. Include pictures that are relevant to the information you’re presenting. For instance, a museum has pictures of the artifacts along with their description on its interpretive sign. This helps the visitors locate the items in the museum and also know a little bit about them.

Contrast

The sign can be precise and extremely interesting, but if its text is unreadable, the sign will fail in its purpose. The sign should be reader-friendly, the text and the background color should be in contrast to allow the viewers to easily understand what is written. If the words seem to blend in with the background, the viewers will have to squint to make out the words. This inconvenience is something you want to save your audience from.

Convenient Height and Angle

Your sign should be designed with your audience in mind. Having a sign that requires the viewers to bend over in an awkward and inconvenient position is an example of a failed design. You want your audience to be comfortable when reading the sign.

Study your audience; find out how old they would be, and have the height and angle of your sign designed accordingly.
