Have you ever been running late and ran into the building you were supposed to be at, but couldn’t remember the floor or the suite you needed to be at?
It happens all the time according to the security guard at the 633 St. Clair building in Chicago. This building houses some very important residents of Chicago including Northwestern University School of Medicine, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) and each of them receive a lot of guests.
When we got a call from JLL to create a directory sign for this important building, we went looking for something that would capture the attention of people that would be entering the building and coming up to the information/security desk. We wanted them to be able to scan the list quickly and find where they needed to go. We also wanted something timeless and that could easily be updated if needed. It also needed to be two-sided.
We came across a product called Rowmark. This product is unique as it is two different colors of material layered on top of each other. This allows the bottom color to be seen when the top color is engraved away. To get that classic look, the customer went with an aluminum front and a classic black backing. To engrave the letters, we choose to do a laser engraving with help from our friends at Denver Signs and Graphics. This would allow a very fine etching of the aluminum side and give us the look we were hoping for. Again, ensuring perfection of the engraving was a must and using a router could not guarantee this using the substrate.

Once the laser engravings were completed, we were off to find a two-sided frame. After calling around and getting a lot of “no – we can’t do that”, we found a frame manufacture named Alpina located right here in Chicago. They were able to manufacture a mini version of a two-sided frame they use in trade show exhibits. This would work out perfectly and if any changes were needed, the frame would be reusable.
Putting the frame together and inserting the Laser engravings went together 1-2-3. More importantly, the sign looked fantastic! We packaged it up and delivered it to Emily, who was the Property Administrator. Both she and the security guard were please with the outcome as you can see from the picture. Most importantly, guests to this building can quickly and effortlessly find where they need to go by just glancing at this sign.
