Winter is an exciting time for fresh piercings, cozy beanies, layered jewelry styles, and the chance to show off that new piece at holiday events. But cold weather brings unique challenges for healing piercings. At Orbit Skate and Boutique, we want every piercing to heal beautifully, no matter the season, so we’ve put together 5 essential winter piercing aftercare tips to help you stay comfortable and complication free.

1. Keep It Clean — But Not Overdone

During winter, your skin tends to dry out, which increases the chance of irritation around a new piercing. Stick with a consistent cleaning routine using a saline solution twice a day. Gently rinse the area, then pat dry with a clean, disposable paper towel, cotton can snag on jewelry and irritate the piercing.

Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or harsh antibacterial soaps. These can strip moisture and delay healing, especially when skin is already dry from colder temps.

2. Moisturize Around the Piercing (But Not On It)

Cold winds and indoor heating can sap skin moisture fast. While you should never put lotion directly on the piercing, you can keep the surrounding skin soft with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer. Apply sparingly around, not inside, the piercing to prevent dryness and flaking.

3. Watch Out for Hats & Winter Gear

Warm hats, scarves, and hoodies are winter staples, but they can also rub against fresh piercings and cause irritation or swelling. Choose soft fabrics and avoid tight-fitting headgear while your piercing is healing.

4. Avoid Pools and Hot Tubs

Holiday travels might include indoor pools or hot tubs, but these are breeding grounds for bacteria. Hot water can also soften skin and increase swelling near a new piercing. It’s best to avoid them entirely during the initial healing phase.

5. Stay Hydrated & Eat Well

Winter dryness isn’t just external, dehydration affects your skin from within. Drink plenty of water and eat nutrient rich foods to support your body’s natural healing ability. Foods high in vitamins A, C, and zinc can help your immune system stay strong.

No matter the season, aftercare is important. Stop by Orbit Skate and Boutique today and let one of our Industry Professionals take care of your next piercing and help you take care of it in the best way possible.
