Every year, on the third Saturday of chilly February, skateboarders around the world come together to celebrate one of the most important parts of skate culture, the independently owned skate shop. Skateshop Day is more than just a shopping event, it’s a movement that honors the backbone of skateboarding.
Skate Shop Day was established in 2020 by Chris Nieratko from NJ Skateshop and Scotty Coats to support independent skateshop during the winter sales slump in February. The idea was simple but powerful, give back to the core skate shops that have supported skateboarding from the ground up. At a time when online mega retailers were dominating sales, and especially during a year when many small businesses were struggling, Skateshop Day was designed to drive skateboarders into their local shops. The goal was to keep money within the skate community and reinforce the importance of buying local.
From the start, they did exclusive releases with
top brands like Real, Spitfire, Antihero, and Krooked like limited-edition decks, wheels, and apparel. These exclusive decks, apparel pieces, and collectibles were available strictly through brick and mortar skate shops. You couldn’t grab them online from big-box websites, you had to walk into your local shop. A February release would ensure a sales surge during the usual slow season.
Skateboarding has always been rooted in community. Long before social media and online shopping, local skate shops were the hub for everything, from hearing about new product drops, to finding out where the next session was happening. Shops sponsor local riders, host video premieres, support contests, and keep scenes alive. Brands like Real and Spitfire have long understood that without skate shops, skateboarding wouldn’t have the same
culture or authenticity. Skateshop Day reinforces that connection.
Each year, Skateshop Day continues to grow. More brands participate, more exclusive products are released, and more skaters make it a point to show up and support their local shop. It has become a holiday of sorts within the skate community, a reminder that skateboarding thrives when we invest in the spaces that invest in us.
As skateboarding continues to expand globally, Skateshop Day remains a crucial reminder of where it all starts, inside the local shop. Whether you’re picking up a new deck, grabbing some hardware, or just stopping by to hang out, supporting your neighborhood skate shop keeps the culture rolling forward.
Skateshop Day isn’t just about product drops. It’s about community, loyalty, and keeping skateboarding core. Check out these exclusive drops at Orbit Skate and Boutique today!
