California and New York strengthened emergency measures today in response to the growing coronavirus crisis, tightening restrictions on residents and businesses. In the largest lockdown in the U.S. to date, California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the state’s 40 million residents to shelter in their homes, except for essential activities.
We are in the early stages on a state wide lockdown for at least the next 30 days. Possibly longer.
How do we maintain as a culture during a this unprecedented time in human history? With social distancing in place, how do we skip the shouts of victory and joyful embrace with a fellow warrior after a hard fought battle with an elusive trick? How do we remove the urge to engage in the special greetings we have with our closest friends? I do not have a grand answer for you.. but we can still embark on our journey through the arts.
Skateboarding, among other art forms and creative outlets, is going to be more important than ever in these trying times. Human beings need to release creativity and energy. The main reason sports have been so wildly popular in every culture in every time period. We need not only a creative and energetic outlet, but we need a community to belong to. A like-minded group of people around us to encourage and uplift us during our journey.
Social distancing will keep us from being close to each other at the moment, but this will not last forever. Remember that. This too shall pass. 
In the mean time, practice your flat ground, build a ledge and learn a new trick. Let’s bring back freestyle! Anything we can do to keep skateboarding alive, let’s do it.
