In 1962, the surf shop “Val-Surf” in Hollywood became the first skate shop when they carried the first self-produced skateboards. These boards, sold complete, featured a surfboard shape and roller skate trucks.
Skate Shops have come along way since then. But one thing has always remained the same… it’s not just a shop, it’s a clubhouse.
Since the beginning, skate shops have served as spot for locals to spend their days watching videos and talking trash, or pop in for a needed bolt or two before shredding the streets. It serves as a home base meeting point for groups to gather before embarking on their usual street missions. Most importantly, the shop is seen as a second home.
While most would say this business model isn’t exactly bulletproof, others wold disagree. The skate shops that remain in tact and successful are those who started a shop because of the need for a home base, not for the money.
Skateboarding is a culture of dedicated individuals who respect those who have the same values. If a shop shows that culture, it can be wildly successful. Unfortunately, most shops fall victim the the harsh line between what the market thinks is cool, and what the public will pay for. It’s a tough line to walk. Choosing the right product at the right time is an art in itself. Shops have to make sure they have a large enough selection, but also need to keep the inventory cost down. It’s one of the toughest gigs in skateboarding.
So, next time you visit your local shop, take a moment to appreciate the time, effort and sacrifice it took to make your home base accessible to you and your homies.
